Chapter 1: The House on Maple Street

The house had been empty for years. Everyone in town knew it—the old Harrison place at the end of Maple Street, with its broken windows and overgrown garden. Children dared each other to run up and touch the front door. Teenagers told stories about ghosts and murders.

Detective Mara Chen had heard all the stories growing up. Now, at thirty-two, she stood on the crumbling porch as rain dripped from the eaves, and she wondered if the stories might be true after all.

The body had been found that morning. A young woman, no older than twenty-five, dressed in a white nightgown, lying in the center of the living room as if she'd simply laid down to sleep. Except she wasn't sleeping. And the room around her was pristine—no dust, no cobwebs, no sign of the decades of neglect that covered every other surface in the house.

"Detective?"

Mara turned. Officer Davis stood behind her, holding an evidence bag.

"We found this in her hand."

Inside the bag was a photograph. Old, creased, faded. A woman who looked exactly like the victim, standing in front of this very house. And on the back, written in careful script: "She'll come home. They always do."

Chapter 2: The Past Returns

The victim's name was Emily Parsons, a graduate student at the local university. She'd been missing for three days before her roommate reported it. The roommate said Emily had been acting strange lately, talking about dreams of a house she'd never seen.

"She said it called to her," the roommate whispered, tears in her eyes. "Said someone was waiting for her there."

Mara felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. The Harrison place had been in her family for three generations. Her grandmother had grown up there. Her mother had refused to talk about it. And now this.

She drove back to the station, the photograph burning a hole in her pocket. The woman in the picture looked so familiar. Where had she seen that face before?

Back at her desk, she pulled up the old case files. The Harrisons had left town in 1985, after their daughter disappeared. The daughter was never found. Her name was...

Mara's blood ran cold.

Margaret Chen.

Her grandmother.

Chapter 3: Family Secrets

Mara had never known her grandmother. Her mother refused to speak of her. All she knew was that Margaret Chen had vanished when her mother was just a child, leaving behind a husband and three daughters.

Now Emily Parsons lay dead in the same house where Margaret had lived. Dressed in white, just like in the old photograph. And in her hand, a picture of Margaret herself.

The forensic team called with news. The body was clean—no signs of violence, no struggle. Cause of death appeared to be natural. A young, healthy woman had simply... stopped.

"Like she just gave up," the coroner said. "I've never seen anything like it."

Mara hung up and stared at the photograph. Her grandmother's face stared back, frozen in time. And behind her, the house. The silent house on Maple Street.

It wasn't silent anymore.
